Thursday, November 5. 2009Accidents Involving ConcussionsA common occurrence in the UK is falls; children and the elderly will experience this more than any other accidental injury. One of the concerns that a person will have when a loved one has fallen is whether or not that person has a concussion. This will usually happen when a person has experienced some kind of head trauma (usually a hard hit) and there is a disturbance that happens to interrupt the natural functioning of the nerve cell inside the person’s brain. When a person has a concussion, there are some very important symptoms you may need to look out for to ensure that they are out of danger. One thing that may happen is that the person may be temporarily unconscious and you should call the doctor immediately if this should happen. Other signs include a severe headache, a sudden loss of memory as well as nausea and vomiting. If any of these things occur you should get the person to the emergency services as soon as possible. Some concussions are uncomplicated which means they usually are not the kind that is life threatening and nothing can really be done about them. The brain will gradually heal itself and the concussion will be gone. However in some cases a person may get a very severe concussion which could trigger some life threatening condition to unfold. One of these is when the “blow to the head” causes a collection of blood that makes the brain become temporarily displaced. This will become gradually worse until the blood is removed. Another quite serious problem is if a person should be unconscious for many days usually because of swelling that happens in the brain. In any case the doctor should be contacted if the person who has the concussion is unconscious, if they feel sleepy, have trouble talking to you, if the condition becomes worse, if they start vomiting or if they have a fit. In most cases the physician will bring the accident victim into the hospital for overnight observation. During the night the person will be questioned as to his or her whereabouts and their identity to see if there has been some damage. Also once the person is sent home, the family should make sure that they do not watch television or read if it can be helped, that they do not physically assert themselves or that they get as much rest as they can. Many people run the risk of having some permanent damage when they have a concussion, some may get epilepsy but this is extremely rare, others may get headaches regularly, vertigo, exhaustion, irritability, and many be extremely sensitive to light and sound, others may have trouble concentrating for any amount of time. Additionally they may feel really bad when they consume alcoholic beverages. In some cases depression may also be a factor. It is very important that if you should get any of these problems that you have them addressed by our physician so that some treatment can be established. Tuesday, November 3. 2009Burns and Accidents in the UK
Almost every day, there are many people in the UK who will have accidents where they will have burns. These burns are damages to the person’s skin that is usually caused by a fire, intense heat or maybe even chemicals. There are three types of burns a person may have that tell you or your physician how bad the damage to your skin may be. You may get first degree-burns which are where the skin is reddish in color and it will be very painful. In some cases, there may be some fluids leaking in the deep skin layers, which may cause a moist feeling in the area. Then there are second degree-burns which are a much deeper burn and you will see blistering of the skin. The third degree-burn is where the layers of the skin are charred or white and the tissue in those layers is now dead. There may be no pain because the skin nerves were damaged in the burning. In this type of accident, being prepared is always the best solution. The most important things you must do are to perform first aid on the burn so that you keep this burn from getting any worse. The very first thing you will need to do is to get the area of the burn cooled, placing the burn under cold running water for at least an hour or until you no longer feel pain. This is not recommended for minor first degree burns. However, should you get burns bigger than your hand or on your face, groin or if you have most of your body covered in any degree of burns greater than the first degree you should contact a physician. There are some things you must not do as well if you should get burned. Don’t stop pouring the cold water on these burns as you head to your doctor. Do not try to pop the blisters. Don’t put butter, ointments or any homemade cures on the burn; you should just use clean cold water. Most importantly don’t forget to have your doctor give you a tetanus shot, especially if you have not had one in a long time. If you find that after a while your skin is very red, painful and swollen, this could be a sign that your burns have become infected and you should see your doctor. In order to prevent accidents involving burns, you will need to take some precautions. The kitchen of your house holds the most possibilities for you or your children to get burned. The best thing for you to do is to keep small children out of the kitchen and away from hot chip pans, kettles or outside barbecues as well as away from the fireplace in your home. To avoid scalding yourself or your child, let hot drinks cool for several minutes and when bathing, add the cold water first. When putting out fires do not put any water in an oil fire, smother fires with a pan’s top, a damp cloth or you could use a smothering blanket and fire extinguisher to help put out the fire and prevent you and your loved ones from getting burned. Sunday, November 1. 2009Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Accidents in the UKThroughout Britain, one of the most serious of the causes of people dying accidentally is by Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. Carbon Monoxide is one of those gases where it has no smell, no color and does not irritate the person it affects until it has been around for a while. Because it is so hard to detect it has caused at least 50 deaths throughout the UK every year and even more occurrences that have happened that are not lethal. The reason that this gas is so dangerous begins with the fact that many people and even those among the health professions have very little knowledge of what Carbon Monoxide Poisoning is; also the symptoms are not readily noticeable. In fact you will find that the symptoms will mirror the symptoms of some other illness or condition. In order to save the lives of your loved ones, you will need to have some idea of the risks that you may have with this condition. This problem affects many people; however children and pregnant women as well as those with heart conditions are the hardest hit with this condition. Carbon Monoxide comes when there is no combustion of fuels that have carbon; this comes from gas stoves, water heaters that use gas, fires and boilers. This becomes a problem when the appliances that the family has is not maintained properly or has not been serviced, as well as those put into an area without good ventilation. If the homeowner fails to remove this gas problem, it usually will stay within the area causing the person to take in too much of this deadly gas. With the human body of any person, there is a need for oxygen, which bond to your hemoglobin; it then takes the oxygen through the body with carbon dioxide, which is then expelled from the body when the person exhales. Carbon monoxide like oxygen will also bind to hemoglobin, which causes the blood to be deficient of oxygen, making the blood vessels leak and which creates a swelling in the brain. This causes some people to experience unconsciousness and may damage a person neurologically. Some of the symptoms a person may get when they have Carbon Monoxide Poisoning include headaches, vertigo, weakness, anorexia, diarrhea, hyperventilation, nausea and vomiting and sometimes a person may have problems with consciousness. When you start having these symptoms you will need to see your doctor. Usually there may be some problems with getting a proper diagnosis of this problem, because most times the symptoms are either too subtle or mirror those for another condition. The easiest way a doctor can diagnose the problem is by finding out if there is more than one member of the household with the same symptoms and if the family is better when they are not in the home. The best way to get rid of the problem is to infuse the sufferer with oxygen. In more significant exposure the individual may need to be in an area with high pressure oxygen so that the oxygen has a chance to penetrate the tissues and the cells quickly. To prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning you need to have all of your appliances checked and fixed and then keep them professionally maintained. Ensure that gas burning equipment has ventilation and get to your doctor, especially if more than one person has the same symptoms. You may also purchase a carbon monoxide detector that will let you know when you have a high level of carbon monoxide. By having this tool you will save your family from the accident of carbon monoxide poisoning. Friday, October 30. 2009Accidents Related to Sport in the UKThroughout the UK, there are a large number of athletes who play a great amount of sports. Some of these sports have been known to cause accidents with the athletes who play them. Being aware of the sports that cause accidents and how to prevent these accidents are important to your overall physical health. Sports on the whole are a benefit to your physical and mental wellbeing. They foster a strong social and psychological way of seeing life. They give you a strong sense of community and teamwork as well as teaching you the power of discipline, persistence and hard work. However, in addition to the great benefits, sports can also bring danger which can cause you to have accidents which can be life threatening. There are quite a few people in the world as well as the UK, who take part in activities known as “extreme sports”, these are the most dangerous and exhilarating sports that people play. In the UK, popular extreme sports include sky diving, snowboarding, bungee jumping, scuba diving, and skiing. These are all made for the most intense athletes, however when done by someone who is not properly trained, they can lead to injuries and in some cases, instant death can also be a strong possibility. When you play sports there are often a wide range of rules that are designed specifically to protect the athlete from injury. Some sports such as boxing have started allowing the referees to stop the fighters if they feel that the boxier has sustained a great amount of injuries much sooner than ever before. Also Rugby has made some important changes to protect the athletes during mauls, rucks and scrums. Additionally there have been some very important changes to other sports so that the players have fewer chances of accidental injuries that could harm them physically. Another way that athletes are protected in the UK is through creating more protective equipment. Professional athletes are given the best there is in protection than they wore decades before. Those young people who are nowadays taking part in some sports may think that these are not cool or that they may be restrictive and not wear them, which lead to harmful accidents. However, they greatly lessen the amount of accidents that they will experience by simply wearing the right equipment and playing the games strictly by the rules. This not only makes the game more fun and easier to play but it also keeps down the instances of people getting hurt with injuries that could end their careers in sport. Wednesday, October 28. 2009Accidents at Home in the UK
Throughout the UK, primarily in England and Wales, more than 4000 people have died and many more have been injured in accidents that happened in the home or around the house it. Most of these happen to children and to the elderly and are commonly associated with falling. Another common accident in the home is fires; they are the cause of more than 500 deaths and other non-fatal accidents every year throughout the UK. These usually come from pan fires, faulty wiring and using appliances the wrong way. Yet another common problem is choking, burns, poisoning and suffocating. Each of these is commonly found reasons children have accidents in the home. Small toys may cause choking, as small children tend to pop everything into their mouths. Children often experience poisoning when cleaning supplies are left in places where the child can drink it. Falls make up a significant amount of the accidents that happen every year throughout the UK, usually the largest number being in children and the elderly, children’s falls come from a wide range of things from falling over the toys left on the floor to falling out of trees. Children are prone to falls because they will try anything. However this is also a large part of the cause of accidents in the elderly and can lead to many very serious injuries and other associated problems. Some people in the older years are known to “break their hip” which is a very common complaint for people over 75 years old. The most important thing people should learn when dealing with accidents throughout the home is how to prevent accidents. There are many tips to keep the home safe and your family from getting hurt. You can ensure that fires are prevented by having fire alarms on all the floors of your home as well as having a plan to escape your home in the event of a fire that all of the family knows and have practiced on a regular basis. You can also test any electrical equipment to ensure that it is properly working and keep heaters and burning candles away from flammable items. In order to prevent accidental poisoning you will want to keep medicines and cleaning fluids away from children by putting them in hard to reach cabinets or having locks on those cabinets. You should also label each of the medicines properly to ensure that family members know what they are and who they are for. Lastly, in order to prevent falls, which is the most common accident in the home, you will need to make sure there are banisters or rails that are secure on all of the stairs. If your home has a swimming pool, remember to keep it covered when it is not in use. Also have your children put away all toy when they are done playing with them to ensure that no one trips on them. Using these accident prevention techniques should cut down on the number of accidents that occur in your home. Monday, October 26. 2009Accidents Involving Alcohol in the UK
One of the top reasons people have accidents in motor vehicles in the UK is the consumption of alcoholic beverages. When people drink before driving they literally take the lives of many into their own hands. Many of the accidents caused, bring life changing injuries or even death to other drivers and their passengers, pedestrians and any passenger in the car with the intoxicated driver. For many people the act of having an accident is devastating, all by itself and for those who caused the death of someone due to drinking alcohol in the UK can be a life changing event, as the courts in this area, see it as one of the worse things you can do. Thus, you could spend the rest of your life confined for one night of drinking and not being smart enough to either have a “designated driver” who will remain sober and will bring everyone home or to ask someone at home that has not been drinking to come and pick you up. The injuries some people, who are in an accident can go from bad to terrifying, even when they feel they are alright afterwards, they may later experience complications that could quite easily go from insignificant to death. Many laws throughout the UK discourage the act of drinking and driving your car. There are advertising, classes, and police regulations that point out how bad this activity is and are all designed to help to cut down on the amount of accidents that could occur every day within the United Kingdom. The loss of life is never a good thing; however it happens on an almost regular basis when it includes drunk drivers, the open road and innocent pedestrians. Drunk driving accidents don’t discriminate either, you can be killed by an intoxicated person whether you are a child or an adult, a baby or the elderly, male or female, it doesn’t matter if you are hit by a car and your injuries are extensive enough you may die. The strict penalties placed on drunk driving in the UK should be enough to deter these drivers from making a mistake they can’t fix, however every day it is the same old story, ending with the same loss of life, destruction of family and a terrible blight on the community. In order to lower the amount of accidents in the UK, you will need to stop drinking and driving. If you are going out to have a few drinks, arrange for a friend to pick you up, designate a driver or call a friend or family member to come to pick you up. Never get behind the wheel if you have been driving and you should never ride with someone you suspect may have been drinking. The life you save from not drinking and driving could be your own. Saturday, October 24. 2009Accidents and Toys
The UK, like any other country has its share of accidents, which are caused by the toys that children play with. Throughout the UK more than 40,000 toy accidents occur every year. The most normal occurrence of these accidents come from people falling over toys or when a baby swallows the small parts that come from older children’s toys. The UK has take the toy problem quite seriously by creating a piece of legislature called the “Toys Regulation 1995” which points out how companies should design and compose the toys as well as how the manufacturers should inform the public of those particular risks. These regulations address risks such as how flammable a toy is, the chemical and electrical properties, whether or not the toy is radioactive and any other physical and mechanical attributes of the toy. The term “toy” is any item that is actually meant for children to play with who are under age 14; these items do not include jewelry or decorations. This encompasses a wide range of merchandise; therefore it is important for manufacturers and parents to protect children against possible health hazards and any physical injury that could happen with any and all toys that children play with. Before you buy any toy it is extremely important that you take a few necessary precautions that could cause accidents and to avoid buying any toys that are deemed illegal by UK standards. You will recognize that it is a legal toy simply by looking for the (CE) European Community symbol on the toy. You may also check for the “British Toy and Hobby Association’s Lion Mark” as this association assures that all of their toys meet the high standard they have set for each product. Additionally when ensuring that the toys you buy are accident free you will want to ensure that the toys are age appropriate for your child. Make sure that toys with sharp points, loose hair, and small components are not given to children who could and often do swallow these items. Keep toys out of the reach of toddlers and encourage all children to play with the toys one at a time. So they know where all the pieces are. Also ensure that all toys are put away after play to keep the other people in your home from being injured when they trip over these toys. Be vigilant about the kinds of toys you buy ensure the safety of your children and yourself. Thursday, October 22. 2009Accidents and Babysitters
A lot of times the causes of accidents come while children are with babysitters, especially when those babysitters are children themselves. In the UK, there is no legislation regarding the age of a babysitter. However, there are some important considerations parents and others should consider before leaving young children with a child as a babysitter and how to ensure that the adult babysitter is a reputable person who will not hurt or allow harm to come to your children. Because there are no laws in the UK to cover this position, parents are the ones that should decide when their child is old enough to care for younger children. Lack of jurisdiction by the court, should not mean lack of common sense. Young people under 16 should not be left alone with infants and toddlers should not be left with someone who is under 14 years of age. In some cases when young children are left alone to watch their younger siblings for short periods of time parents think nothing can happen in the 10 minutes they will be gone, however this is when most accidents occur and the child babysitter is not equipped to handle such occurrences. In these instances, while there are no laws concerning this, parents can still be charged with neglect, and the court may intervene by removing the children from a potentially harmful situation and from the home by Emergency Services. In a lot of cases, the situation with babysitting is usually a good one; however there is still a higher risk of having accidents. Many times, young people who “must” babysit their siblings usually feel as though they are being “made” to do this or are being “blackmailed” into it, which caused them to be less responsible or caring in this situation and more prone to allow more accidents to occur. Most successful arrangements are when parents have the older child attend babysitting courses. These courses help the teen learn first aid techniques and some child development information that enables them to keep their sibling safe when babysitting. Not all accidents occur with the child babysitter; sometimes they occur when a parent is negligent in finding a suitable adult babysitter. In some cases, especially those of single parents who must work, the choice of a good babysitter is not always an option. These parents find themselves sometimes a part of some gruesome story in which their child is the victim, because they did not spend the time checking into the background of their sitter or even checking out the sitter’s home and lifestyle. It is important for all parents to take precautions with anyone who babysits for their children. Your children are precious and the very best care and consideration should be taken when they are left with someone else. You should be cautious with your child, as it keeps down the amount of accidents that could and are likely to happen to them.
